Dulce is a short 3D Animated film that explores the loving relationship between a mother and daughter while balancing the heavy concept of Death.
The film was created by Aleyda Ortiz, Lok Cheang, and Kevin Class
The Characters
Dulce started with a simple doodle I created on my way from Mexico. I started to flesh out the story bit by bit and created the characters that lived in this story. Below are some early designs of these characters
Aurora
Aurora is Dulce’s main protagonist. She’s a curious 7-year-old girl and has two adorable braids with ribbons. A hairstyle that I grew up with. Her shapes are short, in contrast to Mama, but still very round.
Mama
Mama is Dulce’s second protagonist and overall a nurturing figure. She’s protective and soft and I wanted her shapes to resemble that as well. She has very elongated features while her long hair acts as sort of a shell to protect her and her daughter from danger. Really the long hair idea stemmed from my mother telling me that she once had very long hair and so I thought Mama should as well.
La Muerte
La Muerte is also another protective figure in Dulce. Her poncho resembles La Mariposa de La Muerte or the Butterfly of Death while her mask is a homage to Dia de los Muertos.
